A. B. HARTWELL, a Meredith, Massachusetts novel
Opening Page SNEAK PEAK
I’m a visual person, stuck in a world where everybody talks for a living.
Niagara Fontaine, attorney for the Massachusetts Department of Children and Families was completing her closing statement. After four days of trial, we were all tired. As the judge, I found listening to hours of wandering testimony, punctuated by arguments between the attorneys, to fast use up my social skills.
Attorney Fontaine just completed her “May it please the court” when my mobile phone vibrated across my desk. One advantage of sitting at a high bench is I can do other things while appearing to pay attention. The phone screen lit up with a message from my daughter. “I can’t find my ballet shoes.” I suppressed the urge to tell her I didn’t have them with me in the courtroom.
“Where did you have them last?” I texted back. My hand knocked over the stack of mail on my desk. The letter on top was addressed to Amythyst Basil Hartwell and greeted me like an old friend: “Dear Amythyst Basil”. None of my friends would dare call me by that name. I went by A.B. Hartwell and was excellent at evading questions about what the A.B. stood for. I put the letters in a pile and went back to Attorney Fontaine, who was completing her closing statement. She knew I liked brief summaries.
Attorney Paoletti stood up to make a brief rebuttal. I’ll cut him off at fifteen minutes. My phone vibrated again. My daughter. “I don’t know where I left them. And dad says we have to leave for ballet now!” I know how to stop this. “If your dad’s there, have him look for them.” I turned off the phone. Of course, now they’ll both be mad at me.
.My first novel, Niagra Fontaine, was released on September 22, 2018. It was extraordinary to hold the first paperback in my hand.
Rocking Book Covers did an amazing job on the cover. But the contents were mine and it was a rush to see my words in print. Not that I did it alone.
Thanks again to all of you that encouraged me and helped me make this book a reality.
